Job Description:
Shooter Detection Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of
Alarm.com, is seeking a Director of Engineering, preferably with
experience in software, firmware and IoT hardware development. This
role is based in our Rowley, MA office and offers hybrid and
flexible hours options.
Shooter Detection Systems was founded in 2013 to evolve proven
military gunshot detection technology for indoor applications for
the commercial market. SDS is responsible for the creation of the
growing gunshot detection market and continues to lead this market
with innovative life safety products and services geared towards
improving active shooter detection and response. SDS systems are
now protecting schools, businesses, government agencies and public
venues of all kinds across the nation and overseas, including many
household-name corporations in the Fortune 500. In 2020 SDS was
acquired by Alarm.com, a leading provider of security products and
services.
As Director of Engineering, you will oversee and provide
product/architecture leadership for a small, talented, team of
engineers that work on mission-critical gunshot detection sensors
and software to be deployed in both outdoor and indoor
applications. Your ability to guide the growth of the product will
be as instrumental to your success as your ability to guide the
growth and performance of the engineering organization.
This position is responsible for new product development associated
with server and embedded software, and hardware engineering. Such
leadership includes mentoring/coaching team members and managing
resources involved in designing, developing, testing, deploying,
and supporting these software and hardware products. The role
involves providing technical leadership and strategy for system
architecture, application design, and production of SDS's line of
Guardian gunshot detection sensors and applications.
RESPONSIBILITIES - Responsible for overseeing the development of
advanced gunshot detection systems including networked sensors and
server software. Technical direction and management of engineering
and quality teams supporting all phases of product lifecycle. -
Work with Exec and Sales Teams to define product roadmap and
architectures, technologies, and partnerships to achieve this
roadmap. As part of the SDS senior management team you will
represent the engineering team's needs and accomplishments as well
as shortcomings and growth opportunities. - Manage the growth of
the engineering organization always employing best tools and
practices in an Agile methodology. - Work with software team to
select deployment platforms (e.g., Cloud AWS/Azure) and related
implementation technologies. - Work with embedded software and
hardware teams to provide insight into future platform
architectures (e.g., processor and communications selection),
algorithm and implementation technologies. - Review current
research and development tools and practices and work with team to
improve and grow these policies and procedures with the product and
team growth. - Partner with IT functions to establish
infrastructure to support the engineering team's tools and needs to
be successful. - Outstanding communication, facilitation,
negotiation, and coaching skills.
REQUIREMENTS - 3+ years of experience leading technical teams of
designer/architect engineers, including making critical decisions.
- 15+ years with preferred background in product design,
specifically related to software, embedded software, and electrical
hardware. - BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or
related fields - Proven track record managing software development
teams with related hardware knowledge. - Knowledge of networking
technologies, protocols and features (TCP, TLS, High Availability,
Active Directory, etc.) - Demonstrable knowledgeable of platforms
such as Jira, SVN/GIT, PLM (Empower/Omnify). - Hands on experience
involving technical reviews and decision making. - Effective oral
and written communication
NICE TO HAVE - Experience with network devices such as sensors,
cameras, controllers etc. - MATLAB, Java, or C-language specific
development experience - Experience with gunshot detection or
acoustic based sensors
