Job Title: Small Animal Veterinary Technician Reports to: Head small animal veterinary technician or veterinarian on duty FLSA Status: Non-exempt Summary: The small animal technician provides basic nursing care of all patients, assists doctors in surgical procedures, performs routine technician tasks using basic technician skills (i.e. drawing blood, handling lab work samples, administering vaccines/injections, taking radiographs). Small animal technician should be able to communicate with clients about their pet's health and concerns (including admitting patients, history taking). Technicians must also be able to communicate with doctors and other team members about patient cases and care. They should also take initiative to work independently as well as with team members on assigned tasks. Responsibilities also include maintaining an organized work area, and maintain hospital sanitation and cleanliness. Technician should maintain a positive and professional manner and an upbeat attitude during their shift especially during stressful periods. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples listed include all that may be found in positions of this class. Laboratory: Collect blood, stool, urine or tissue samples for testing Perform laboratory tests, such as urinalysis, heartworm tests (wells and Snap test), fecal flotation's and egg counts. Perform laboratory tests on in-house equipment including ProCyte Dx, Catalyst Dx Take and process x-rays Surgical: Care of instruments (sterilizing, cleaning, sharpening dental tools) Perform dental cleanings (including scaling and polishing) Prepare animals for surgery Administer and monitor anesthesia to animals Examination and Treatment: Ask client probing questions about the reason for the visit Record case history, weight, temperature and other details within 24 hours Restrain and stabilize animals during examination and treatment Trim nails, express anal glands, remove sutures and perform other routine procedures Administer medications, vaccines and treatments prescribed by a veterinarian Provide basic education on pet care, nutrition and medical conditions Educate clients on how to administer medications at home Recommend products for optimal wellness, such as vitamins, supplements, dental cleaning, flea control, geriatric care and dietary measures Radiology taking radiographs and processing images Maintain controlled drug logs, anesthesia logs and radiology logs Office Management: Maintain accurate pet records and billing information Prepare and label medications to be sent home with the patient Clean, sanitize and organize examination rooms after every appointment Order, organize, label and restock supplies and pet foods Feed, walk and bathe pets when necessary Help with drug inventory, including monitoring expiration dates on drugs Customer Service and Reception: Answer telephones, initiate phone call when necessary Schedule appointments Greet callers Prepare invoices Discharge patients Follow up with clients Knowledge of pharmacy (in-house and online VetSource) Knowledge of Care Credit services Make phone call in regards to surgery call backs, returning messages, patient follow up, reminder calls for following day appointments, etc. Familiar with large animal services, being able to field emergency large animal calls Equipment Care: Maintain equipment, including daily care and regular maintenance and quality control (laboratory, x-ray, anesthesia, dental, etc.) Troubleshoot problems with equipment with available literature or calling customer service lines Expectations: Exhibit and maintain a professional, positive and patient manner at all times Train new employees when necessary Complete tasks and duties in a timely manner Work well independently and with minimal supervision Work together as a team with all staff members Assists other team members, in all areas of the practice, to complete all tasks before closing the practice at the end of the day Help with large animal tasks when needed - may include running large animal lab work (i.e. blood work, fecal egg counts/flotation's, etc.) Communicate with other team members about patient care, ongoing cases, events or problems (i.e. problem with lab work machines) Take on extra tasks when needed to help with the day to day operations, cleanliness and organization of the hospital which may include large animal tasks (i.e. extra cleaning tasks, inventory tasks, etc.) Work as a team player with other staff members to ensure all tasks are complete and that we all provide the best client and patient care Attend and participate in regular staff meetings Qualifications: Positive attitude and the ability to work well under pressure. Work well in a team based environment. Additionally to perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education & Experience: Certification preferred Experience with animals Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Excellent verbal and written skills, empathy for clients and their pets, handle difficult situations professionally and calmly, ability to self-motivate as well as educate and motivate technicians on shift, ability to work in a fast paced stressful environment, ability to work with various animals including exotics.
