A Postdoctoral Scientistpositionis available at New England
Biolabs Inc (Ipswich, MA) to develop new technologies for mining
the microbial community for novel enzymes. Our laboratory has
developed MetaGPA [PMID:34747693], a framework to bridge the gap
between genetic information and functional phenotype. We already
applied MetaGPA to the discovery of a carbamoyltransferase, that
catalyzes the formation of a previously unknown cytosine
modification on DNA and RNA. The successful candidate will further
develop and apply MetaGPA for the discovery and characterization of
novel enzymes for a wild range of biotechnological applications
notably in the field of polymer biodegradation such as plastic and
chitin. This is an opportunity to combined functional genomics and
data science for the discovery of enzymes for sustainability. We
are looking for open-minded, independent, highly motivated,
proactive, creative, and passionate researchers with excellent
collaborative and communication skills and ready to be challenged
with multi-disciplinary R&D projects.Primary
Responsibilities:
- Conceptualize and carry out research to support projects on the
discovering and characterization of enzymes from complex
environmental bio-samples.
- Perform metagenome analysis using novel and established
tools.
- Effectively communicate findings to the scientific community
through publications and presentations.
- Interact and collaborate with members of other research
divisions to further program and division goals.Required
Qualifications and Experience:
- Ph.D. in Biochemistry, molecular Biology, bioinformatics, or
related field.
- Attention to detail with a demonstrated track record of
producing high-quality work in the form of peer-reviewed
publications.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to
generate and maintain detailed lab records and to make
recommendations based on research outcomes.
- A strong work ethic, with an emphasis on both efficiency and
quality of work.Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
- Experience with acquisition and analyses of next-generation
sequencing datasets.
- Proficiency designing and implementing tailored bioinformatics
workflows (using R, Python, JMP or equivalent) is a plus.
- A commitment to research excellence, strong analytical and
problem-solving skills, and enthusiasm to learn and develop new
techniques.
- Proven ability to work independently and in collaborative team
