Job Description:

Hefring Engineering is looking for a manufacturing technician with experience in both electronic and mechanical assembly. You will work closely with our experienced development engineers to be part of the team building the latest, "best-in-class" autonomous ocean glider, OceanScout. The group has designed a single-person deployable, subsea vehicle which maneuvers using an internal buoyancy engine, shifts internal mass using multiple motors, reads and processes sensor data, and transmits information to the cloud via satellite.

This position will provide the opportunity to work with a talented team of engineers from different disciplines with decades of combined experience. You should be a good problem solver who can think analytically use your great attention to detail and passion for quality to support the manufacturing process for OceanScout. If you have excellent motor skills for fine assembly and are an organized person able to work independently and to a production schedule, we encourage you to apply.

Your primary workplace will be our waterfront development and production facility in Gloucester, MA, but you should enjoy traveling and field work, and be able to handle yourself on a boat. Expect to participate in field testing of the vehicle on a boat both with colleagues and also, at times, with customers. This is not a remote position. Flexible working hours are permitted, but you should expect to work on site with colleagues.


The ideal candidate should possess:

  • Proficiency in reading mechanical drawings / electrical schematics / cable drawings / wiring diagrams
  • Expertise with intricate and complex electrical / mechanical assemblies (highly detailed work involving small-diameter wire, fine-pitch mixed-signal connectors, novel motor couplings)
  • Skill in building and testing cable assemblies
  • Proficiency with fundamental electrical and mechanical theory (AC / DC circuits, Ohm's law, gear drives, belts / pulleys, fluids, pumps, motors)
  • Proficiency with electrical / mechanical hand-tools - including electrical meter, crimp tools (TE, JST, Molex), soldering iron, torque wrench
  • Comfort working alongside engineers in a fast-paced /highly collaborative environment, within the boundaries of a production schedule
  • Ability to regularly lift glider (approx. 50 lbs)
  • Willingness to participate in regular field work supporting glider testing (lake or ocean)
  • Authority to work in the USA
    Additional experience in the following areas would be of strong benefit:
    • Nautical experience (general seamanship / small boat handling)
    • Some PCB skills (in particular surface-mount soldering)
      Personal characteristics of a successful candidate include:
      • Organized and detail-oriented
      • Thrives in a highly dynamic, start-up environment and can extend themselves into related tasks to get the job done
        • Relevant college / university degree preferred - BS in Engineering, BS in Electronic Engineering Technology, BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Associates.
        • Significant professional experience (and any training or certifications) will also be considered in lieu of formal education
